Why GSM is useful
GSM gives you a measurable fabric property rather than a vague adjective such as 'premium' or 'thick'. When two garments use similar constructions, it can help explain why one feels lighter or more substantial.
It still cannot be read in isolation. A dense fine-gauge knit, a brushed fabric and a coated fashion fabric can have very different behavior at comparable weights.
GSM does not equal squat-proof
- Opacity depends on how open the knit becomes under stretch.
- Color and contrast matter, especially in white and pale shades.
- Garment sizing changes how much the textile is extended on the body.
- Finishes and liners can change coverage without changing the simple GSM story.
